A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction is a Book Award Finalist

The law firm of Gailor Hunt Davis Taylor & Gibbs, PLLC, is excited to announce that attorney Jaime Davis’ recent book about divorce is a book award finalist. Jaime is a co-managing partner at our law firm specializing in family law matters, including collaborative divorce. Her book A Year and a Day: Divorce without Destruction is a finalist for the 14th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA).

a year and a day national finalist

In North Carolina, spouses need to be separated for at least a year and a day before they can become divorced. This period is critical. During this time, emotions are often running high. It can be easy to take an overly aggressive approach to the divorce, ruining family relationships in the process. A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction provides readers with practical advice for getting through a divorce or separation without destroying important family relationships, and without destroying their financial future.

The National Indie Excellence Awards

Every year, the NIEA nominates only two books as finalists. The competition was particularly stiff this year. Authors from across the United States submitted their books for review. Judges selected the winning finalists based on their superior writing, combined with the excellent presentation of their final published books. The judges valued both the form of the books and the content of the books, and they reviewed books spanning many different genres.

Becoming an NIEA finalist is not easy. There is a high volume of entries for the competition every year. The purpose of the competition is to support independent, self-published authors. With the widespread use of e-readers, more authors than ever are publishing their own books. Finalist books show excellent written content as well as excellent visual content.

Only books that are published with an ISBN number are allowed in the competition. Jaime’s book stood out above the finalists in every other category to secure the finalist award. The NIEA only selects two books total as finalists.

A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction

A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction is based on Jaime’s podcast of the same name. Both Kindle and paperback versions of the book are available. The book provides readers tips and information for going through separation and divorce without destroying their finances or family relationships. Many people decide that they are ready to go through with a divorce, but they do not know what comes next. Her book helps people become educated about the process and makes them better able to prepare for a successful divorce.

A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction helps the reader understand the process of separation. For example, many people are not aware that spouses must be separated for a year and a day to file for divorce in North Carolina. During this critical period, spouses will make important decisions about their futures.

What Prompted Jaime to Write A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction?

Jaime has extensive experience in the area of family law. She decided that she wanted to start a podcast related to separation and divorce in 2017. The guests on her podcast share their expertise in areas related to the separation and divorce process. In the end, Jaime decided that the material made available through her podcast interviews was so helpful, that it needed to be compiled into a book. Her book will make her helpful tips more accessible to more people who are struggling with child custody issues or separating in North Carolina.

As Jaime pointed out in her interview with Spark Publications, when people go into a separation or divorce, emotions are running so high that people get locked into a “I have to win” mindset. When it comes to your family relationship and your children, however, there is no winning. “It does not have to be a zero-sum game. You can get through the process and make sure that everybody is still OK.”
